This project by architect Ricardo Bastida was known as “La Alhóndiga.” For years, it functioned as such but had a short life. In 1919, it caught fire. Later, the modernist building was restored, but activity inside soon ceased. For decades, it remained closed, with its beautiful façade and abandoned interior.
It wasn’t until 1975-1980 that alternative uses began to be considered for it. And practical ones for residents and visitors to Bilbao. But it wasn’t until 2002 that the current project was commissioned — an impressive renovation by Philippe Starck, which took 8 years to complete in full.
