Visiting an impressive and surprising architectural space in Bilbao.

And these adjectives are not chosen at random. On the outside, it’s an elegant modernist building that began construction in 1905. On the inside, it’s an innovative space that leaves first-time visitors in awe. It features a grand indoor atrium of 6,193 m2 surrounded by 43 large artistic columns. These are a point of attention; none are the same and were designed and crafted by 120 artisans. They support the three interior buildings, which are three brick-clad cubes. The ceiling is the transparent bottom of the heated pool on the upper floor.

The division of the three interior buildings of Azkuna Zentroa gives you an idea of the various activities you can enjoy there.

  • Fitness Center. It features a pool, gym, and a variety of sports and wellness activities.
  • Mediateka Building. It includes a library with specific spaces for children to get closer to reading, making it a great place to visit if you’re traveling to Bilbao with kids and want them to have some relaxed fun.
  • Complementary Activities Space. This area hosts numerous cultural activities and shows.
Additionally, the center has access to movie theaters. And in the old preserved wings on the ground floor, now with glass walls, you’ll find various venues. Primarily dining options, with bars, cafés, and restaurants. But also shops and even a cooking classroom!

Past and Present of Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao.

Between 1905 and 1910, a large wine warehouse was built in a central area of Bilbao. This project by architect Ricardo Bastida was known as “La Alhóndiga.” For years, it functioned as such but had a short life. In 1919, it caught fire. Later, the modernist building was restored, but activity inside soon ceased. For decades, it remained closed, with its beautiful façade and abandoned interior.

It wasn’t until 1975-1980 that alternative uses began to be considered for it. And practical ones for residents and visitors to Bilbao. But it wasn’t until 2002 that the current project was commissioned — an impressive renovation by Philippe Starck, which took 8 years to complete in full.

Today, Azkuna Zentroa features a modern, artistic, and impressive interior. It houses spaces for leisure, art, culture, sports, and entertainment. And visiting it is a must for anyone looking to experience Bilbao and feel the pulse of the city.
