Azkuna Zentroa

Azkuna Zentroa (former Alhóndiga de Bilbao) is a former wine warehouse converted into a cultural centre.

It was built between 1905 and 1909 by the architect Ricardo Bastida (1879-1953). In 2012, a major renovation was carried out, in which the exterior architecture has been maintained, with three large brick cubes supported by 43 columns, each with a different design, being built inside.

It is an innovative cultural and leisure space with a varied offer for all types of audiences and the only European center that has won the award “Global Awards for Excellence,” which awards best practices in all types of real estate development.

Its 43,000 m2 stands in the old wine warehouse of the city transformed by the designer Philippe Starck into a multi-purpose place where exhibitions, concerts, lectures, children’s workshops, physical activities, reading area, cafes, restaurants, shops, cinemas…

The Azkuna Zentroa or the Alhóndiga de Bilbao, among its varied offer, has a suspended pool that you can observe from the ground floor. With illuminated sidewalks, 43 columns all different, its screen on the ceiling and glass ceilings that are the base of a swimming pool, from this ground floor you can watch people swimming.

This pool is located on the third floor of the Physical Activity Centre and has an area of 3,000 m2.

The enclosure has almost a thousand square meters of water sheet, divided into three glasses with different depths and uses: swimming, activities and children’s use.
